5 out of 5 stars Goes without saying...   November 7, 2007

Doesn't surprise me at all at how fabulous this book is. I made the bean balls to go with some pasta today for lunch and don't let the name make you raise eyebrow - this is perfect, filling and super fast to make. I seriously need to get my toosh to the market asap - the book makes a perfect excuse to throw a party!

I am still a huge fan of vegan with a vengeance but I was thrilled when I found out another book was to follow... why not round it out with VEGAN CUPCAKES TAKE OVER THE WORLD ;) if you haven't already.

*ahem* bring back the PPK SHOWS!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic vegan cookbook!   November 6, 2007

This reminds me of my mum's cooking bible, a big door stopper of a book that she referred to for everything throughout my childhood. How wonderful there's a version for vegans! Its the most thorough, comprehensive, user friendly, descriptive vegan cookbook I have ever read, detailing how to cook each type of veggie and grain etc, with tips throughout to help you become a better chef.
It has great recipes that do not rely overly on soy products. Recipes are tagged if soy free, gluten free, supermarket friendly & whether they are time friendly.
I feel healthier just reading this book!
My only small criticism would be I wish there were more photographs, but there are some in the center.
Its s goldmine of wonderful information that I know I will use & learn from for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite cookbook!   November 6, 2007

I sort of feel like a nerd because I found myself curling up on a Friday night to READ a COOKBOOK. Ha. This book is worth it for the front section alone, which describes everything from how to stock a great vegan pantry to how to cook every vegetable under the sun. I love informative kitcheny stuff like that.

The little symbols next to the recipes for gluten-free, under 45 minutes, low fat, etc. are awesome as well so you can tell what a recipe is at a glance.

The recipes are delish. I have already dazzled my (non-vegan) friends with Fresh Rosemary Foccacia, Chickpea Cutlets (make em smaller and you have great chickpea nuggets too!), Lentils & Rice w/ Caramelized Onions, and more.

Great book, get it.

5 out of 5 stars Your Stove is Asking You to Buy It.   November 5, 2007

From the moment the book arrives, you'll love it! It's not just because of the beautiful photographs and intriguing recipes - it's because the authors and their style of writing capture you, fascinate you, and make you excited to try each and every recipe that they have created.

I'll admit that I am a fan of both Vegan With a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. But I wanted to review Veganomicon without those two prior books in mind. The fact is, I couldn't. I knew that the recipes would be outstanding; the usual nervousness that comes with serving a guest that new pasta recipe was not present. I have a confidence when making Isa and Terry's recipes, a confidence that sometimes does not exist when trying other recipes out for the first time.

I think that each of these reviews, each Veganomicon recipe photograph on Flickr, on blogs, on the Post Punk Kitchen forums, are a testament that many people, experienced chefs and novices alike, absolutely adore this cookbook. And there's no reason why you wouldn't, either.

My favorites so far have been the Eggplant Rollatini and the Lemon Bars. The Pumpkin Ziti with Sage Bread Crumbs is not far behind; I love the cashew ricotta that is used (there are two ricotta recipes in the book - both delicious!). There is something for everyone here, whether you hate vegetables but love mushrooms, choose seitan over tempeh, want breakfast at all times of day, or want to eat a light lunch of bok choy with shallots.

There are excellent recipes for autumn and fall-time meals. The Thanksgiving spread would be more colorful and delectable if you added in a few of the mix and match sides and appetizers, such as Mashed Spiced Sweet Potatoes, Chestnut-Lentil Pate, and Butternut Squash & Pumpkin Seed Rice Paper Rolls.

Thank you for rocking our worlds, Terry and Isa!

5 out of 5 stars You will not be able to stop cooking   November 4, 2007

This has quickly become my favorite cook book. Since I received it, I've made a ton of things from it, and everything is so delicious. I can tell you right now that the Tofu Florentine will change the way you look at brunch forever, The Cheater Baked Beans wowed my entire extended family. I'm a big soup person, and Double Pea Soup has totally made my top 5 favorites of all time, although the Ancho Lentil Soup with Grilled Pineapple gave it a run for its money. I could just go on and on forever, but I'll just name-drop a few of my other favorites: Leek and Bean Cassoulet with Biscuits, Cholent, Spicy Tempeh with Broccoli Rabe and Rotelle, Skillet Corn Bread, Pumpkin-Cranberry Scones, and Terry's Favorite Almond Cookies. Everything comes out flawlessly.

Besides the recipes, the book is chock full of really useful information like notes about the utensils you'll need, how to prep certain things, cooking times, and handy little icons to let you know if a recipe is gluten free, low fat, quick and easy, etc. Not to mention the drool worthy photo spread.

Love it! You will to.
