Amazon.com Review If you don't get home until six or later and still need to get dinner on the table, this is the book for you. The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet pares down ingredients to their simplest and most flavorful form. "Keeping things simple takes the frantic quality--and pressure--out of preparing a meal," says author Nava Atlas. "Simplifying helps you to slow down and enjoy the process of cooking." Atlas devotes a whole chapter to tofu and soy products, including seitan and packaged products like soy "hot dogs" and "sausage." She also has a chapter on "Rudimentary Wraps," which includes recipes for Avocado and Ricotta Soft Tacos, Goat Cheese and Red Pepper Wraps, and the ever popular Black Bean Burrito (spice them with green chiles). Pasta is a quick and easy favorite. Keep jarred sauce on hand and you have the beginnings of Pasta with Triple Red Sauce or Pasta with Olive Sauce. Serve veggie burgers on whole-grain buns with a side of Creamy Coleslaw or Baked Barbecued Tofu and Potato Kebabs for an easy weeknight meal. Or try Asian Sesame-Soy Noodles paired with Broccoli and Tofu in Peanut Sauce. Every recipe includes a nutritional breakdown including calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and sodium. Nearly every recipe has suggestions for what to pair the dish with and on what page to find it. This is an especially handy cookbook for time-crunched families. The food is easy, quick, healthy, and doesn't require great concentration to prepare. --Dana Van Nest

A good product for those who don't want to fuss about the kitchen too much but have a decent meal!
Perfect Everyday/Weekend Cookbook! January 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the first cook book I have bought in at least a decade. I have my favorite recipes and occasionally try out a new one from the Internet or a friend. BUT ... the "5-ingredients" of this book's title attracted me to pick it up; the clarity and the simplicity of the ingredients and the methods encouraged me to buy it; the delicious results mean that I use Nava Atlas' book at least 3 or 4 times a week, whether I have just got in from work or am planning something ahead. Soups are delicious; potato (sweet and/or white)and vegetable recipes are scrumptious; soy recipes are fresh and interesting, and there are some new slants on grains, salads and dips. I love the new tastes and the ease of putting things together. THANK YOU, NAVA!!
Indespinsible. November 30, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic cookbook. Not only does it have great recipes (which are ready in a flash, more often than not, as well as being brief in the ingredients), it encouraged me to remember that the best dishes I serve are often the ones in which a very few items shine forth in their best light. Handy for anyone, vegetarian or not, but especially for the cook who wants to whip up a veggie dish without breaking the bank at the market.
5 Ingredients? Yes. Gourmet? No. November 5, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am definitely not the most experienced or gifted cook around, but this book was a bit too basic, even for me. As someone who eats strictly vegetarian, I own a few veggie cookbooks, and this is the one that gets the least use. Most of the recipes are solidly mediocre. A couple are pretty bad. None have been outstanding so far--though to be fair, I have yet to try every single one. In sum, if you are going for very quick and easy, you may like this cookbook. But if you are looking for a little inspiration in a recipe, this is probably not the book for you.

I love this book! I have had it for a couple of months now and use it 3-4 times a week, no repeats yet, and I have liked everything I made! My meat-loving husband has liked everything too and that's saying something. True, everything is very simple and you are not going to get complex, truly "gourmet" flavors from these recipes. But if you are like me (someone who loves to eat, but finds cooking boring unless I am in the mood) this book is perfect--everything is really easy, quick, cheap (only 5 ingredients!) and also very colorful and so very visually appealing-- for simple, healthy everyday food I don't think you can really ask for more. You could also easily add in ingredients to make the recipes more interesting-- I have done this successfully several times. I also really like the menu suggestions since I don't always like thinking of what foods go with what.
