I wish I had a sixth star to give it January 5, 2009 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There should be a way to make this "5 star" book stand out above all the other 5 stars. Like other reviewers, I could not put it down - especially the deeper I got into the book. The honesty about the situations and the rich lessons drawn from them make this book unique. It is not just a journalistic retelling of events and it's not a "here's where I've been and what I've done" memoir either. The author has combined the very best aspects of a book giving an insider view of military special operations and a book with sensational business & personal wisdom that the reader can start using today.
Even when the truth hurts, he does not shy away from it or water it down. I only wish that Col. Blaber did not have to so often wrestle his own military to do what was best for the mission and the men. You must buy and read this book!
Outstanding book on leadership and decision-making January 5, 2009 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read many books on leadership and decision-making and "The Mission, The Men, and Me" is absolutely one of the most outstanding books on the subject. I simply could not put it down. What struck me the most was the simplicity of the principles. Don't let the simplicity fool you. These principles are truly profound. They are life lessons that everyone can use. It has really opened my eyes and I look forward to applying these principles. To Pete Blaber, excellent work and I sincerely thank you sir for your service.
Outstanding insight for all leaders January 1, 2009 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is a must read for all leaders - period. Blaber's insight into the challenges and opportunities he faced and experienced as a Delta Force Commander in real-world and complex military situations, and how he applied his guiding principles to lead his unit and our country through a confusing and ever-changing world to fight terrorism and protect freedom makes most of our challenges and problems in the business world seem trivial. However, as a leader in the corporate world, after reading and thinking about how Pete used the "guiding principles", I feel that there is no challenge or problem that we may be facing in today's uncertain economic times, that cannot be approached with the same thought processes and common sense insight that Pete provides in this book. All leaders, whether in the military, the government, the business world, or otherwise, can benefit by understanding how Pete explains his common sense leadership dimensions and responsibilities. In the business world, sometimes we can lose sight or control of our real objectives. However, by viewing the "mission" (or the business objective)and those that work around us (the "men") within the proper context and perspective, all within a framework of what is the right thing to do (the "me"), key decisions can be made, key actions can be taken, and situations can be managed with a renewed confidence and energy. As leaders in the free world, the results will hopefully bring about some of the future change that is required in corporate America as we learn to adapt and further secure our position as an economic superpower.
OUTSTANDING! December 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A brilliant book on applied practical leadership. A must read for today and tomorrow's military leaders as well as a fascinating read on the author's unconventional military experiences. One of the best books I've read in 2008.
Great book on life December 17, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has given me pause points to consider actions from and has improved my leadership skills. He has also filled in the gaps of my understanding of the action at Tora Bora and the various skill brought to bear on that action. Military leadership continues to appall me at times with the scramble for career advancement and the micro management brought about by the continued development of technology. The stupid mix of skills and their leadership position is flabergasting at all times. Air Force leadership in ground actions. Helocopter assaults where a ground assault would obviously be better ect. Great book that I read in one session.
