Product Description A leading neurosurgeon delivers a groundbreaking program for increasing brain function at any age.
The brain, like the muscles, heart, and other organs, is made of flesh and blood and requires proper care to maintain its optimum state of wellbeing. In this remarkable prescription for brain health, Dr. Larry McCleary reveals not only how to forestall the effects of aging but also how to improve brain function.
Taking a unique metabolic approach in his scientifically-based program of prevention and regeneration, Dr. McCleary shows readers how to:
- Assess their risk for memory loss and other cognitive impairment - Incorporate a comprehensive regimen of a brain-building diet, brain-specific supplements, mental (and physical) exercise, and stress reduction techniques to enhance memory, acuity, and clarity - Personalize the three-part Brain Trust program for a more dynamic brain from childhood to age 100 - Avoid surprising and common lifestyle pitfalls that may unknowingly damage brain cells - Relieve or greatly reduce migraines, hot flashes, and hearing loss

Average January 10, 2010 D.J. Young (Melbourne, Australia) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The actual subject about nutrition for your mind is a fascinating one and something that people should be made aware of. The way how this was put in Larry McCleary book was fairly average. I found his real mission was to sell his own range of very overpriced vitamin products. When you have someone selling you their products and talking about medical research then you have a major conflict of interest. About a third of the book is taken up by mind exercise games which are nothing more than very basic adding and subtracting formulas which there are mistakes in.
I found Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper a much better read. Like all this research you need to keep an open mind on it
Informative! June 19, 2009 Lisa Bassan (Peachtree City,GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book, written by a brain-surgeon, gives you up to date information about how our brain processes memories and how we can use nutrition and supplements to improve our minds and to relieve such maladies as hot flashes and migraines. The explanations as to why women suffer from migraines and hot-flashes was eye-opening.
A MUST for migraine sufferers! April 28, 2009 Vanessa A. Taylor (Queens Village, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been reading every newly published book that offers any hint of migraine advice. I have stubborn migraines that have stumped my neurologist ad gynecologist. I finally have some control and have reduced my migraines using herbal supplements. This book recommends Taurine and a bunch of other things you can easily get at a vitamin shop. Give it a try if you've tried everything else. I was on Topamax, Gabapentin, and many different birth control pills. I now use magnesium, butterbur (Migra-Eeze) and taurine with co-enzyme Q10 for 3 weeks headache free - then PMS rears its ugly head. My migraine frequency has been reduced as well as the level of pain I experience when I do have a migraine. This book is easy to read and packed full of suggestions! You will not be disappointed. It's a part of my permanent book collection and I refer to it frequently.
The Brain Trust Program April 20, 2009 L. Euman (JBB, Iraq) It was a little difficult at first to get past the clinical wording, but his book is exremely helpful. I read it myself and have recomended it to friends with brain injuries and memory issues. If you can read it, it can give you great insight into your body.
Brilliant and Authoritative July 17, 2008 WILLIAM MCLEAN (Medford, OR USA) 5 out of 14 found this review helpful
I couldn't help but notice that Dr. McCleary's photo on the back flap of the book shows that he is a bit overweight. This is natural considering his apparent love for beacon and eggs for breakfast, and his love for red meats, butter, and cheese. In my opinion, this is the only questionable part of his book. I just cannot believe that a diet abundant in saturated fats and cholesterols is not harmful to the cardiovascular system. And what is harmful for the cardiovascular system is also harmful for the brain. Furthermore, any amount of overweight puts a strain on all internal organs - for both man and beast.
Most readers may think I am some kind of fanatic. Well, maybe I am. But I believe that a calorie restricted, nutrient rich diet, leads to better health for the brain and all the other organs of the body. I also believe that calorie restriction is easy when the food served is simple and not made artificially enticing.
Maybe Dr McCleary believes that most people simply will not be willing to eliminate these expensive and enticing kinds of foods. I do admit that almost everyone probably feels this way, and would greatly benefit just by doing exactly as he has written. For this reason I must bow to his judgment.
I definitely agree with Dr. McCleary's recommendations for dietary supplements and mental exercises. What I'm really saying is that I plan to do as he says except that my diet is a bit more restrictive - simply steamed vegetables, whole grains, skim milk, more fish, less whole eggs, a little skinless chicken, and almost no red meat. And no candy. Candy kills more people than cigarettes.
I'm a 70 year old 5'10" male weighing in at 150lbs. My goals are to reduce my weight to what it was at age 25(140lbs.), and to improve my cognitive functions as much as possible. This book is sure to help. I highly recommend it to others.
