But Nava Atlas has solved the dilemma with a collection of down-to-earth recipes reflecting the way families really eat. Flexible, adaptable, and filled with ways to make wholesome food more attractive to children, The Vegetarian Family Cookbook tackles breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time like no other vegetarian cookbook on the market.
Covering everything from family-friendly salads to comforting casseroles, Atlas shows how simple it can be to make enticing meat-free meals, with selections such as Quick Black Bean and Sweet Potato Chili, Vegetable Upside Down Casserole, and Alphabet Soup, sensational sandwich fare for home or school, as well as energy-packed choices to start the day. She also takes the mystery out of cooking with soy and provides dozens of delicious whole-grain, low-sugar desserts. Most of the recipes include vegan substitutions for eggs or dairy products.

Great place to start for vegetarian recipes, but... August 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like this recipe book for its family-friendly approach. It has great basic recipes, and my family has enjoyed most of the recipes we've tried. The only drawback I've found is that the food, as prepared per the recipe, tends to be bland. I usually research my other recipe books on what spices to add and have been pleased with the results. The book does suggest "embellishments", but usually not amounts to add.
not much new here July 23, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have another veg cook book by Nava Atlas, and this book is very similar. I got this book because it's big selling point is that it has plenty of simple recipes for picky kids. This book didn't really offer much new from any other veg book and nothing really new or inspiring for my picky kids. If you are looking for a basic simple veg book this one is okay. It offers plenty of vegan recipes, maybe more vegan than vegetarian. Not the best book ever.
One of the greatest and most used books in my kitchen/ This one is for the whole family! June 25, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The recipes are so easy and I love how nava atlas lists other side dishes on the same page to make a well balanced meal. I orignally bought this book to introduce my little ones to vegetables as the book promises on the back cover that it is the only vegetarian cookbook designed to satisy every member of the family and I am amazed my 3 year old eating all the veggies on his plate and actually loving it and asking for more. My husband and I just love this book, I use it just about every day. I am currently looking at vegetarian Express by nava atlas we LOVE this book as well. Try it and enjoy.
This is now my favorite cookbook! March 8, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have been using this cookbook almost daily since I recieved it. It has so many great recipes that have proved to be both child and husband friendly. I would suggest this cookbook for anyone looking for some quick, healthy ways to eat better. I also like that most of the ingredients she uses are things I normally have on hand.
My favorite cookbook December 19, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful vegetarian cookbook, but I think that meat-eating families should have it on their bookshelves, too. In fact, you don't even need kids to benefit from this book.
This book provides recipes, but more importantly, it provides tons of ideas for nutritious meals, snacks, shakes, baked goods, etc. Although many of the recipes are written to use dairy products and eggs, you can make them vegan with a few simple substitutions.
Unlike many vegetarian cookbooks, which require the use of fancy-schmancy ingredients that are hard to find and that you probably don't have sitting around the house, these recipes give suggestions and variations so that you can use the ingredients you have handy or just like better. Many of the dishes are also not terribly labor-intensive, and some are not labor-intensive at all. The result is filling, nutritious, earth-conscious home-style cooking that even the pickiest eaters will love.
Recipes include everything, from full dinners, to soups, to breakfast foods, to smoothies, to quick, no-cook snacks. Ideas on how to serve and pair foods are also provided, as well as some nutritional information.
To sum up, I love this book, and I don't even have kids!
