Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea-that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects. Furthermore, it can eliminate the need for expensive and invasive surgical interventions, such as bypass and stents, no matter how far the disease has progressed. Dr. Esselstyn began his research with a group of patients who joined his study after traditional medical procedures to treat their advanced heart disease had failed. Within months of following a plant-based, oil-free diet, their angina symptoms eased, their cholesterol levels dropped significantly, and they experienced a marked improvement in blood flow to the heart. Twenty years later, the majority of Dr. Esselstyn's patients continue to follow his program and remain heart-attack proof.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease explains the science behind these dramatic results, and offers readers the same simple, nutrition-based plan that has changed the lives of his patients forever. In addition, Dr. Esselstyn provides more than 150 delicious recipes that he and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have enjoyed for years and used with their patients. Clearly written and backed by irrefutable scientific evidence, startling photos of angiograms, and inspiring personal stories, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease will empower readers to take charge of their heart health. It is a powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart-disease therapy.

5 out of 5 stars IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS   September 2, 2010

I'm a 60 yr. old RN that developed angina with exertion. I had already read the China Study (also a very informative book)and tried cutting back on dairy and meat products, but had no reduction in the angina, so I ordered Dr. Esselstyn's book and took his advise and stopped ALL dairy, meat and oils. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I use almond milk with my cereal (tastes nearly the same as reg. milk)for example. I rarely desire the meats I loved. Truthfully, I would rather go without meat, dairy and oils than to be going into the hospital for cardiac caths, angioplasty and maybe bypass surgery in the near future or risking heart attack or stroke. Seemed a small price to pay if it worked. About 3 weeks into the diet change, I noticed a definite reduction in the angina that I was getting when I went up my two flights of stairs in a hurry. By 4 weeks, it was gone entirely. You lose a few pounds in the change over and can eat all the allowed foods you want. I haven't had my cholestrol checked yet. But my numbers prior were considered good with cholestrol running 147 to 177. My good chol. was high and my bad chol was low. Trig. were 150. My TC/HDL=2.1. After reading both of these books, I discovered that your levels have to be lower to be safe. If you take care of your body, it will take care of you. I can tell you his book makes sense AND it works!

5 out of 5 stars A 23 y/o medically passionate aspiring doctors view   August 31, 2010

I am a complete science dork. My favorite course in undergrad (just last year!) was biochemistry where we learned about how food is broken down and used up in our bodies, to put it very simply. Anyway, I actually became no-added-fat vegetarian on the weekdays while in undergrad just because it made sense due to the basic science principles. I didn't need to read studies to figure that one out...which is comforting because it makes the claims by this book easily understood and accepted. Anyway, I read several books before this one that recounted research from the 1970's and earlier that all suggested the same dietary approach for several significant reasons. The thing is, I was still eating my pizza, ice creams, etc Friday - Sunday. I eventually came across this book which has transformed me completely. The book is written so well--very easy and entertaining read. Somthing I could not put down the 1st time and then read for a second time. The information is well explained for non-science geeks without being too elementary for us science folk. Whats especially nice is that the recipes are amazing and that there are many other recipe books out there for further support. I use the recipes in here on a daily basis (please try the black bean & corn salad...way more yummy than you would assume by just reading the ingredients!) and I retire to the Almost No-fat books by Bryanna Clark Grogan. Look her up--O-M-G. Good tasting comforting food...great holiday food too. Anyway, it's just nice that changing your entire dietary approach is not as hard as it may seem due to all the great CHEAP resources available out there. Please do not read the rules of the book and think its too complicated. Please give it a good honest try. For me, trying out some nonfat vegan junk food helped. I still eat it very sparingly due to habit, but it helped me out mentally to know that I could have anything I wanted with the promise of a fruitful future. Best of luck. Read the book--it's fun, enlightening and it challenges you to become the best person you can be for yourself. If you have high self worth and self respect, the first step to prevention or reverese should come easy. If you love to cook and enjoy experimentation in the kitchen like I do, then you're going to have a ball--just make sure to buy some recipe books out there because learning how to do many of these things out of theblue is a bit frustrating otherwise and the most important thing here is our compliance to the diet rather than our pride. You learn many new techniques and learn a lot about the vast array of foods around you that you may have not appreciated nearly as much. =)

5 out of 5 stars This book works!   August 18, 2010
Jonathan Schneider (Tarzana, CA)
I bought this book after having some heart attack symptoms last month. I am a 48 year old Male. I did everything the author said to do even got off all oils even though every other Cardiologist and my doctor say to consume fish oil, nut oil and seed oil. After 5 weeks of following the diet and exercise program I achieved the following results:

Total Cholesterol down to 160 from 295
Triglycerides down to 148 from 275
LDL down to 99 from 199
Fasting Glucose down to 90 from 101
Weight down to 214 from 240

My doctor who has been begging me to go on statin drugs now says I don't need them. My goal is to get down to 180 and keep Cholesterol down at 150

Getting off of all fats has really made me loose weight.

Thanks DR. Esselstyn

I don't have heart disease (yet) but both parents and brothers have had or do have heart disease. Reading this book has made me understand what causes heart disease (diseases in general) and what I can do to prevent myself from "inheriting" what my parents and brothers have. I also read The China Study. Both books were quite an awakening for getting healthy and staying healthy. I am 65 and want to enjoy my retirement.

In chapter 8, he states "Those who have heart disease should avoid all nuts"
This seems to be in direct contradiction to all of the literature out there-quoting from one: ([...])

"Eating nuts promotes cardiovascular health

BOSTON, MA -- Researchers from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health have examined the effect of eating nuts on cardiovascular health, reports the Harvard Men's Health Watch. "Their work shows that nuts really are healthy, especially for men at risk for heart disease," says Dr. Harvey B. Simon, editor.

Studies show that healthy men, and those who have already suffered a heart attack, can reduce cardiovascular risk by eating nuts regularly, reports the Harvard Men's Health Watch. Doctors theorize that:

* nuts may help lower cholesterol, partly by replacing less healthy foods in the diet
* nuts contain mono- and polyunsaturated fats known to benefit the heart
* the omega-3 fats found in walnuts may protect against irregular heart rhythms
* nuts are rich in arginine, a substance that may improve blood vessel function
* other nutrients in nuts (such as fiber and vitamin E) may also help lower cardiovascular risk."

Just google "nuts heart disease" and you should see plenty of links like the above. Similarly advices like "no avacado or at most 3 pieces of fruit a day" also in chapter 8 are controversial at best.

I agree with the general premise(lots of support in current research) that a fruits and veggies diet is the most advisable, but his idea of following it 7x24 with ZERO exception is not practical.

I recommend: Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss instead.
